Let's Hear it For Oscar Wilde

Today is his birthday.  A great quote: "The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on.  It is never any use to oneself."

Yes, let's hear it for Oscar Wilde and celebrate his wit and wisdom and not dwell on the dark side. Have you ever read his fairy tales, among his first published works and originally written for his two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan, and in his own words "partly for those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy." These are beautiful stories filled with Christian symbolism and in sharp contrast to Grimm's fairy tales and others which are often gruesome and violent and not at all suitable for children (or adults). One of my favorite vignettes from "Paris Je T'aime (2007) is of a couple who visit the tomb of Oscar Wilde at Pere Lachaise Cemetary and Oscar himself appears to the man, who was definitely being "tedious" and not "charming" (referring to Quote of the Day, July 7, 2007) and offers him some advice on how to win his female companion back who has gone off in a huff. Most delightful. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
